The Sundays

THESUNDAYSSome people have a dog that offers comfort after a long week. Other people have a significant other. I have blankets. Blankets comfort you without asking for anything in return. Such is the case with inanimate objects (unless battery operated, 😉 ).

As a child, I loved blankets so much that my older sister joked that one day I would be crushed beneath them. I had many. I spent a whole year saving money to buy the softest blanket I had ever touched at a Scandinavian gift shop in Rockford, Illinois (circa 1997). I was a cool kid (only literally).

Yesterday, I bought a mug because the thought of drinking coffee out of it on a Sunday morning made me feel so relaxed. Unfortunately my room is incredibly cold today and the coffee lost it’s warmth within ten minutes. It’s a good thing my blankets had my back (and front).

That’s all I ever hope to say about blankets. The end.

I’ve said for some time that if there is any way that I would like to go, it’s on a plane taking a nosedive into the ocean. Personally, I think it would be thrilling. I imagine the record scratching on Peggy Lee’s anthem of apathy: Is That All There Is.

Today I would like to add that I would like this nosedive to be set to the score of Brian Eno’s: Deep Blue Day (I am a sucker for contradictions).

Like some cruel joke, I have gone and gotten sick. The wheels were set into motion the second I hit ‘book’ on a flight. It’s psychosomatic. My brain says something to the effect of “if you have time to lean, you have time to clean” except it’s “if you have time to fly, you have time to di…” well let’s hope not that.

And so my flight is delayed, allowing for a preflight drink. Let’s hope it agrees with cold medicine. Let’s hope it agrees with arriving in New York with only three fucking days to be in New York (sick).

Someone recommended that I record some of the songs that I am learning on the guitar. Today I taught myself “In My Room” by The Beach Boys. Here is a very crude recording and my first attempt at the song. Forgive the filter that I’ve applied to mask bad guitar playing/congestion.
